Arviat EDO Selected as EDO of the Year

The Nunavut Economic Developers Association Board of Directors ispleased to announce that Keith Collier, the CEDO for Arviat, has been selected as Nunavut’s Economic Development Officer of the Year for 2013.

Keith Collier has been the Community Economic Development Officer for the community of Arviat since January of 2012. He has also been on the Board of Directors for Kiluk Ltd since 2012 and the Nunavut Economic Developers Association since 2013. He has also been a member of the Organizing Committee for the Kivalliq Trade Show since 2012 and he is currently chairperson for the Arviat Training Initiative Advisory Group.
 
Keith and his wife are originally from Newfoundland, but have made Arviat their home since 2011.  Keith, who is a university graduate, has a background in research and development.
 
Keith is always available to his clients, is continually looking for programs and services that can benefit Arviarmiut and is never shy to ask for assistance, when needed.  Not only does he fulfill his duties and responsibilities well as a CEDO in the community of Arviat, Keith 
has also actively participated in and/or joined various regional and territorial organizations and events that support economic development and capacity building in Nunavut. These include but are not necessarily limited to:
  • The Kivalliq Trade Show Society (2 years of service as a member of the Overall Planning Committee, Exhibitors Committee, Marketing & Communications Committee)
  • The Nunavut Mining Symposium (2 years in attendance, presenter during the 2013 Symposium)
  • Kiluk Ltd – Nunavut Development Corporation (1 year as a member of the Board of Directors)
  • Nunavut Economic Developers Association (2 years as a member and 1st year as a Kivalliq Director)
  • Arviat Mine Training Group (2nd year as the overall coordinator/facilitator of the group)
  • The Kivalliq CEDO Conference (2 years in attendance)
  • And more . . . 
 
Over the 2013 year, Keith has assisted many Arviat residents, organizations, entrepreneurs and businesses in accessing program funding from organizations such as: the GN Dept of Economic Development & Transportation, the Kivalliq Partners in Development, Aboriginal Affairs & Northern Development Canada, Kivalliq Mine Training Society, NTI’s Hunter Support Program, Human Resources Development Canada, the Nunavut Arts & Crafts Association, Agnico Eagle Mines and others. 
 
These efforts have directly led to the establishment or continuation of a variety of training and sector development initiatives in the community, such as:
  • Arviat Diamond Drill Training Program
  • Arviat Mine Training Group
  • Performer training for the Qaggiqtiit Performance Group
  • Audio and sound engineering training for local schools, Hamlet staff and performance groups 
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certification for boat operators
  • Outfitter Training Courses for outfitters
  • Carving Stone Training Program for local artists
  • Prospecting training
  • Heavy equipment operator training
  • Welding certification program for local residents 

An EDO of the Year is selected each year.  To be eligible for nomination as EDO of the Year, an individual must meet certain basic criteria and be nominated by another member of the Nunavut Economic Developers Association.

All nominees are judged on the following selection criteria:

  • Length of service as an EDO
  • Amount and type of service provided to the community and clients
  • Community involvement
  • Participation in NEDA and collaboration with fellow EDO’s
  • Dedication to the Economic Development profession in Nunavut
  • Dedication to professional development
